Data Structures and the Java Collections Framework by William Collins focuses on the fundamentals of data structures and their implementations. Students come to understand and use data structures effectively by studying the method descriptions and applications. Students also get to see a variety of implementations of those data structures, including those provided in the Java Collections Framework. This approach has the advantage of exposing students to professionally developed code that they will be able to emulate and continue using in their later coursework and beyond.
Pedagogically rich, this text encourages hands-on learning. Programming projects throughout allow students to practice developing and implementing their own data structures, either by building them from the ground up or by extending applications in the book. This text is also accompanied by optional labs, which reinforce concepts presented in the book by giving students a chance to practice the concepts they are learning. Instructors can use these labs in many different ways, such as in a closed lab, in an open lab, or for optional homework assignments.
