Defining Mass

Linear Perspective

Composition

Using line to create mass simultaneously generates contrasting patterns of light and dark. These values direct the eye through the picture, causing it to pause and focus on those places where the contrast is the greatest, thereby establishing the rhythms and dominance relationships within a composition. Besides influencing the illusion of depth and the overall balance of the piece, having a range of values intensifies the sense of drama and the total visual impact of a drawing.
