If we rotate and look closely along the surface of an object then the three-dimensional aspects of actual texture become very clear. The surface is made up of tiny surface convolutions, pits and projections. When light strikes an object these hills and valleys cast shadows or catch the light, forming complex patterns of value and intensity. Our eyes can detect these patterns, allowing the brain to predict and simulate what a surface might feel like.

Drag the Adjust Lighting button to see how the position of the lighting affects the visual aspects of an actual texture. Click the Depth button to see the painting become 3-dimensional. Click the Flatten button to return to a 2-dimensional surface.
