Roman World Visual Art
The Romans adopted the Hellenistic visual arts brought by slaves from their conquered lands, and we know many of the ancient works through the Roman copies. Romans also refined the art of mosaics and spread the new art throughout the empire. When Rome adopted Christianity in the fourth century CE, Christian artists adopted Roman skills of sculpture and mosaic, and the newly wealthy churches became more glorious than the pagan temples that they superseded.
