Impressionism
The Impressionist style originated in Paris in the 1860s, and these painters wanted to explore optical rather than, or in addition to, social realism. They studied changes in light and color and the effects of placing adjacent dabs of different hues of paint to fool the eye. In their quest for a realistic look at color and light, they left their studios and painted in the open air. Impressionism influenced sculpture by its emphasis on surface texture to evoke a feeling.
