Fauvism
At the beginning of the 20th century, a loosely aligned group of painters used color in ways that departed from observation. Their detractors called them the “The Fauves,” which means “wild beasts,” for their reckless play with reality. Nonnaturalistic color and emotional exuberance dominated their paintings.
