Order

Symmetry/ Asymmetry

Architects try to balance two competing desires in design. On the one hand, they want to bring order to their structures to make them understandable and pleasing. On the other hand, order without diversity can be monotonous. Designers play with symmetry and asymmetry in structures to achieve a harmonious balance.

"Symmetry" occurs when a composition is split into two halves by a central axis with each side having the same size, shape and position. The elements on the right (or top) are the mirror image of the elements on the opposite side. “Asymmetry” occurs when there is a different arrangement of elements on either side of the central axis.

Select either Symmetry or Asymmetry and look at the different examples by clicking the 1, 2, or 3 button. Then click the Build It button to create your own symmetrical or asymmetrical arrangement within the space. To insert a new wall, click the image of a wall on the left. You can scale, rotate, or move the walls.
