Medieval Western Architecture

The fall of the Roman Empire led to a combination of Roman, Christian, and Germanic elements in the architecture of the resulting new kingdoms. The Middle Ages introduced new architectural styles, including Romanesque, then Gothic churches, as well as large castles of stone. In the Middle Ages, Muslim armies swept through North Africa, Spain, the Middle East, and into Asia, transforming the architectural landscape with mosques, minarets, and domes.
