Renaissance Architecture

Italian architects, beginning in the 13th century, looked to classical models to move away from the soaring Gothic structures of the Middle Ages to create buildings that were models of balance, simplicity, and proportions based on Pythagorean ratios. In addition, they restored domes to church architecture. These innovations transformed secular architecture and urban planning as well. As Renaissance principles spread north through the 16th century, some architects — called Mannerists — modified the classical forms to add interesting tension to their buildings.
