17th and 18th centuries

Architectural styles in these centuries took three major forms. First was the “Baroque,” marked by the continued use of classical forms designed on a grander scale with more expressions of power and passion. The Baroque style spread all over Europe in the form of palaces as well as churches. Second was “Rococo,” which added curved forms and decorative work to the Baroque style. By the middle of the 18th century, some architects began to recoil from the appearance of excesses of the Baroque, and returned to a simpler, more cohesive style, called “Neoclassicism.”
