20th - 21st centuries

The horrors of World War I (1914-1917) caused some architects to want to transform society and its structures, and they began a movement called “Modernism.” The key phrase “form follows function” governed much of their approach. This meant that buildings ought to mirror the reality of their use. By the 20th century, some designers reacted to the stark Modernist style and introduced a “Postmodern” movement meant to add other levels of meaning to the Modernist work. Art Deco was one such expressive movement. Architects into the 21st century are following their creative genius in diverse ways.
