Romanesque
Medieval church architects of the 11th and 12th centuries developed an architectural style based upon the ancient Roman rectangular basilica. Romanesque structures are massive, with round arches, thick walls, and barrel vaulted ceilings. These dark buildings gave the illusion of sanctuaries and reflected the monastic life where they began.
