Subtractive FormsArchitects can also design structures by using the subtractive method. This means that portions of a plane or volume are removed, altering the original shape. Sometimes subtraction can change the original form — a square can become an “L” shape — but other times the original form remains recognizable. Buildings designed by the subtractive approach often are designed from the outside in, and appear regular from the outside — as if carved from a solid piece. They are aesthetically pleasing, but at times cannot adapt easily to changing needs. |
