Architecture is the art and science of building. Humans have always made structures to shelter their many activities — this pragmatic use is the science of construction. Beyond the functional aspects of building, however, lies an aesthetic quality — this is the art of architecture.

Unlike the other arts, architecture has to serve both function and beauty, and we can understand both better by an appreciation of the elements that support the beautiful, enduring structures of the past and present.
