Interior/ExteriorArchitecture is the defining of spaces. These include both the space within the building and the space surrounding the structure. Interior space is typically defined by the use of vertical planes placed in such a way to create a feeling of enclosure. Using a horizontal plane — a roof or ceiling — closes off the space from the elements above. When designing interior space, an architect must consider human factors such as the height of the average person and human traffic patterns. These factors will determine where the openings — doors and windows — will be placed. The walls that create interior space also can be the same walls that define the exterior space. When designing the perimeter of a building, an architect must take into consideration the landscape, surrounding buildings, and the structural requirements of the materials they are using. |
