Relationships

Architects not only consider how spaces are arranged within a building, but also analyze the relationship among the spaces themselves. Buildings are made up of spaces that are related to one another by function, proximity, or circulation.

There are four main kinds of space relationships: 1) “spaces linked by a common space,” 2) “space within a space;” 3) “adjacent spaces,” and 4) “interlocking spaces.” The exercise will show you how these space relationships align.
