Proportion

Learn about proportion and the Golden Section!

Instructions:
  1. Choose a unit of measurement for example, 1 = 1 cm.
  2. Mark the two edges of both your pieces of paper with the numbers 3 5 8 13 21, etc. until reaching the end of the sheets (as illustrated on the right). Notice that each new number is the sum of the previous two. This series of proportions approximates the measurement of the “Golden Section”. The number of marks you make on each edge will depend on the basic unit of measurement you select.
  3. Draw straight lines connecting the points and cut the papers on these lines.
  4. Arrange the various squares and rectangles together and you will find that it is easy to form harmonious relationships.
Materials: Scissors, ruler, two pieces of paper
Questions:
  1. What did you learn about the harmony implicit in the Golden Section proportions?
  2. Do you agree that all the arrangements that were formed were harmonious? Why or why not?
