Learn about masonry structures!
Instructions:
Explore what makes brick constructions strong enough to bear weight using brick-shaped sugar cubes.
Use the illustration as a guide to build three kinds of columns. Stack the cubes
one on top of another
two columns next to each other.
with each row perpendicular to the previous row. (This is called “bonding.”)
Place books on top of each column until it breaks. (Notice that the columns bend before they break.)
Glue the bonded tower - this acts like mortar in a brick wall. Add books until it falls.
Experiment with dynamic loads shake the surface under the columns.
Materials:
One box of
rectangular
(not square) sugar cubes; white glue
Questions:
How high did you make each kind of column? How many books could each hold?
What would you have to do to make a masonry column stronger if you were building a building?
