As dancers move through space, their bodies seem to create designs as viewers watch them move across the stage. The interaction between a dancer’s body and the surroundings can be used to create shapes and meaning. One way to analyze the interaction between the dancers and the surrounding space is by visualizing the dancer as the positive space carving through the negative space of the dance’s setting.

Since dancers move as they portray spaces, the audience (and the choreographer) can visualize “trails of motion” as a dance unfolds.
