Pre-Production

Casting

As the pre-production phase draws to a close, the casting director, director, and producer choose the actors to fill the roles in the film. A “casting director” is hired to identify the actors best suited to a role. The casting director works from a list of “character breakdowns” which describes each character’s profile, including personality type, gender, age, voice, and other qualities. The casting director usually works through an “agent,” the actor’s representative who negotiates for the part.

Actors must undergo an audition to demonstrate their acting ability and a screen test to be sure they are photogenic. With the final casting, the pre-production phase ends.
