Introduction

Western literature began when people in ancient Sumeria and Egypt created written alphabets. From that moment on, writers could record their activities, thoughts, and hopes and the creative products of their imagination.

Written expressions can be creative (fiction) or true (nonfiction) and take forms from prose to poetry, but they have the capacity shared by all the arts and humanities to allow us to enter a world other than our own. Like the other arts, writers carefully use formal elements to create engaging and transforming pieces.
