DimensionThere are many kinds of characters in literature. Some are “flat,” which means they embody one or two qualities that can be readily described. Others, called “round,” are more lifelike in that they are more fully developed and complex. “Stock characters” are types rather than individuals (a brave hero, a loyal servant, etc.). Some characters remain the same throughout the work, and these are called “static.” Static characters may be contrasted with “dynamic” characters that change as the plot unfolds. |
