Character

Relationship

Characters in most literature do not stand alone; they develop through the narrative in relationship with other characters, so we must analyze the relationship among them. The main character is the protagonist, also called the “hero.” The “foil” helps reveal by contrast the qualities of another main character. The “antihero” is a protagonist who has the opposite characteristics of most of the traditional heroic qualities, that is, he or she might be bewildered, deluded, or even pathetic.
