Tone

Tone is the atmosphere that the author creates within the literary work. It reveals the author’s attitude toward the people, places, and events in the work, and it enriches the psychological impact of the story. Readers are led to see if they agree with the author’s attitude toward the world and characters he or she creates.

All of the stories focus on the same subject but are written in a different tone. Note how the change in tone changes the relationship between the author and the reader. Click the story buttons at the left to show stories with different tones.
