Proscenium Theater

Theatrical productions must take place in a space in which an audience can watch, and different kinds of theatres are defined by the relationship of the audience to the performers.

“Proscenium Theatres” are the most popular modern style of space. These place all of the audience in front of the performers. Often the stage space is elevated from the building floor, and a large proscenium archway separates the audience from the performance space. This archway gives the viewers the impression that they are viewing the action through a picture frame. Proscenium theatres allow directors to stage scenic spectacles like Broadway musicals.

The word “proscenium” also refers to the area of the stage that is still visible to the audience when the curtain is down.
