Thrust Theater

Some proscenium theatres are built so that the playing space extends out into the auditorium; and such buildings are called “thrust theatres.” In a thrust theatre, the audience sits on three sides of the action, which takes place in an elevated playing area in the middle of the audience space.

Performances on a thrust stage tend to emphasize acting rather than large spectacle entertainment because the placement of elaborate sets would interfere with the line of sight from the audience.
