Black box theater

The “Black Box” theatre is an intimate and flexible performance space. The total space is a large open room that contains audience and performers alike. In some productions, the audience is seated in various places throughout the space while the action occurs around them. This creates the most difficult challenge for directors and actors since they must incorporate the audience while at the same time engaging and entertaining the viewers.

Some productions in Black Box theatre may feature special scenic effects (through lighting and staging) while other performances emphasize the work of the actors. In all cases, performances in Black Box theatres make the audience feel intimately involved in the action.

Create your own performance space. Drag chairs and actors into the large box. After placing an object, you can drag it with the mouse, or rotate it by clicking the Rotate button. If you drag the chairs or actor off the stage, they will disappear. To start over, click the Clear Stage button.
