Character

Characters are central to the impact of a drama, and the meaning of a play can change depending on how actors portray the characters. Sometimes directors can manipulate the plot itself by transforming characters and modify the play’s message through this. For example, different kinds of characters may recite the same lines, but each may subtly change the meaning.

The relationship between characters also will modify a plot. For example, a love story is strikingly different if it expresses love between a young couple or between a mother and child. Characters and their relationships, then, are key to conveying meaning in a drama.
