Acting

Characterization

The defining nature of theatre is that live actors perform for an audience. Therefore, the quality of acting is essential to the success of a dramatic production. The first requirement of actors is that they convincingly portray the play’s characters.

“Characterization” is the expression or description of particular qualities of a character, and this allows the audience to find the character believable and understand his or her motives. There are several important elements in characterization — the character’s physical qualities, psychological profile, moral values, and social background. None of these qualities stands alone; instead, each builds on the other to develop a well-rounded character.
