Acting

Body Language

Saying words are only part of revealing a character, because while words can say what we mean, our gestures and demeanor — our “body language” — reveals how we feel about what we are saying. Body language can enhance what is spoken or convey subtle feelings in conflict with the spoken dialogue.

While we use body language in everyday life, actors typically exaggerate it in the theatre. Actors must be aware of their every movement as they deliver their lines to ensure that the audience understands the nuances underlying a character’s actions.
