Directing

Concept

Dramas must have an overall “concept,” that is the overarching principle that will inform all elements of the play. Through a complex process of collaboration, a director and designers decide on the look and feel of the production. The director is ultimately responsible for the concept of the play and how it affects the audience’s interpretation of the performance.

Many elements may affect the concept of a production, including genre, setting, the relationship of the audience to the action, the performance space, and costumes. An audience’s reaction to two performances of the same play can be strikingly different depending on the director’s concept.
