Directing

Composition

Directors must consider how the drama will appear to the audience. Therefore, the physical arrangement of the actors on stage is essential. Much like a dance choreographer, a director must consider where on the stage any part of the action will take place — “upstage” (away from the audience), “downstage” (at the front of the stage), or “center stage.”

In addition, directors must position all the actors as they deliver lines or perform some action. To successfully decide the composition of a drama, a director must be able to imagine how the audience will view the finished production.

Click a silhouette of an actor to place him/her on the stage. Reposition the actors by dragging them left and right to move them across the stage or up and down to change their distance from the front of the stage. To remove an actor, click their highlighted silhouette.
