Theatrical Design

Scenic

The design of the performance space sets the tone for the production of the play. Modern plays often use dramatic sets and special effects to surprise an audience and create a realistic experience. However, performances use all kinds of scenery to achieve effects desired by a director.

There are a number of different types of scenery used in performances: 1) “Minimalist” uses few scenic elements. 2) “Drops” are large pieces of material painted with various scenes and suspended behind the action. 3) “Architectural” sets provide two or three-dimensional pieces of scenery. 4) “Projection” is a technique in which visual images are projected onto material. Of course, designers may combine drops, architectural sets, and projections to create a dramatic effect.
