ScenicThe design of the performance space sets the tone for the production of the play. Modern plays often use dramatic sets and special effects to surprise an audience and create a realistic experience. However, performances use all kinds of scenery to achieve effects desired by a director. There are a number of different types of scenery used in performances: 1) “Minimalist” uses few scenic elements. 2) “Drops” are large pieces of material painted with various scenes and suspended behind the action. 3) “Architectural” sets provide two or three-dimensional pieces of scenery. 4) “Projection” is a technique in which visual images are projected onto material. Of course, designers may combine drops, architectural sets, and projections to create a dramatic effect. |
