Theatrical Design

Lighting

Lighting represents an important element of theatrical design, and modern technology allows for some stunning lighting effects. Designers must be aware of the various purposes for lighting so they can make the most effective use of the lighting possibilities.

First, lights must be used to enhance visibility — the audience must be able to see the actors, scenery, props, and costumes. Then, designers use lighting to focus the attention of the audience on important points of the action at any given moment. Finally, lighting sets the mood of the play, including time of day and year. Effective lighting design accommodates all these needs seamlessly.
