Red blood cells contain hemoglobin (366) so the lack of mitochondria may give the cell more room for hemoglobin. Since they lack mitochondria, they can not use up the oxygen they are carrying for their own (probably minimal) energy needs (see chapter 3). Red blood cells do not creep around like the white blood cells do so they donít need much energy (367).
More since there will be greater oxygen demand by the muscles (369).
Erythropoietin since the erythrocytes are being destroyed and oxygen supplies are falling (369).
These animals are both blood-feeding ectoparasites and require anticoagulants in order to continue to feed. Anticoagulants would be useful in preventing thromboses (373).
Listen for murmurs (380).
Since the guards are standing stiffly at attention, they are unable to exercise so the skeletal muscle pump is inactive (391-392). The blood pools in the lower extremities and less is allowed to flow to the brain. Eventually they faint. The spectators and royal family do not usually faint because they are more free to move their lower leg muscles.
