1. Chronic vomiting expels stomach acid from the body. This loss of acid can cause the pH of the body fluids to rise.
2. Examine the carbonic acid reaction on page 67. If a person hyperventilates, he or she expels CO2 faster than it is produced, lowering its concentration on the left side of the equation. The law of mass action predicts that a reversible chemical reaction will proceed from the side with the more concentrated reactants to the side with the less concentrated products. The carbonic acid reaction would thus proceed from right to left as written on that page. This would use up H+ and thus raise the pH of the blood. (This is responsible for the dizzy feeling brought on by hyperventilation.)

4. You would need 75 g of glycine to make 1 L of a 1 M solution. But in this problem, you are only making 0.5 L (500 mL) and 0.1 M (100 mM), so the amount of glycine needed is (75)(0.5)(0.1) = 3.75 g.
5. The metabolic rate would be tremendously slowed down, because enzymes are catalysts and the function of a catalyst is to speed up chemical reactions. Without catalysts, metabolism would be too slow to support any form of life we know of.
