Chapter 10: Joints |
1. Located in bursae and synovial joints, synovial fluid is contained at the locations where it is produced. It has been described as the perfect body lubricant. Discuss the value of synovial fluid and identify at least two clinical conditions involving this fluid.
2. If ball-and-socket joints permit the greatest range of movement, why arent all the synovial joints of this type?
3. Identify four types of synovial joints located in the hand and state the types of movement permitted by each.
4. From the previous chapter on the skeletal system, you learned that the periosteum does not cover the articular cartilage. Review the functions of the periosteum and explain why it is not found in synovial joints.
5. In anticipation of what you will learn about muscles in the following chapter, explain why each movement has an opposite movement. For example, extension is the opposite movement of flexion, and abduction is the opposite of adduction.
