Chapter 10: Joints

Introduction

Chapter 10: Joints

In order for the skeleton to serve the purposes of protection and movement, the bones must be joined together. This chapter describes the joints, or articulations, of the skeleton and discusses some basic principles of biomechanics relevant to athletic performance and patient care. Chapter 11, in which the actions of skeletal muscles are described, will build on the discussion of joint anatomy and function presented here.
