Chapter 17: The Endocrine System |
1. Why do catecholamines require second messengers whereas the lipophilic hormones do not? Relate this difference to the location of their cellular receptor proteins.
2. The anterior pituitary has often been called a "master gland". In what sense might this description be correct? In what sense is it misleading and incorrect?
3. Are the anterior pituitary and posterior pituitary just two regions of one gland, or are they two different glands? Relate your answer to the hormones secreted, the regulation of secretion, and the embryonic origin of the anterior pituitary and posterior pituitary.
4. What blood test could you perform to see if you were under stress? Explain your answer.
5. Suppose a person with a normal thyroid gland took thyroid pills. Would he or she lose weight? Why or why not? What endocrine change would be produced by those pills? If, after a few months, the person stopped taking the pills, what would happen to his or her body weight? Explain.
