Chapter 22: The Respiratory System |
1. In the recovery room following the surgical removal of her ovaries (oophorectomy), a patient complains of a sore throat. If she didnt have a sore throat before the surgery, what is the most likely explanation for her sore throat at this time?
2. You are the winner of a skiing package to Mammoth Lakes, California. Nestled in the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains, Mammoth has ski runs that go from 9000 to 12,000 feet in altitude. What causes your headache and difficulty breathing on the first day? What physiological changes occur that allow you to feel better a couple of days later?
3. Patients with pleurisy--inflammation of the pleural membranes--attempt to repress their breathing because it hurts when they take a breath. What physiological changes are produced by voluntary hypoventilation? How does the body respond to these changes?
4. How is a deep-sea diver like a bottle of champagne? (Hint: Think of what happens when a diver ascends too rapidly and when a champagne bottle is uncorked.)
5. A man who has been warming up his car in an enclosed garage for a period of time suddenly remembers that his lunch is still sitting on the kitchen counter. After getting out of his car and walking a few steps he collapses. Why did he pass out? Why did he pass out after walking, and not while he was sitting in his car?
