Chapter 27: The Male Reproductive System

Critical Thinking Questions

Chapter 27: The Male Reproductive System

1. Explain what is meant by the latent development of the reproductive organs during puberty. What hormonal factors bring about puberty in a male?

2. The reproductive system has been described as a "nonessential" body system because it is not necessary for the survival of the individual. Upon maturation, however, the reproductive system does produce hormones that maintain adult features as well as bone structure. These hormones also influence behavior, blood composition, and metabolism. Discuss your thoughts as to whether or not the reproductive system is nonessential.

3. Explain what effect, if any, an enlargement of the prostate would have on reproductive functions.

4. As a safeguard against having more children, a 40 year-old man is considering a vasectomy. This procedure involves surgically removing a short section of each ductus (vas) deferens within the spermatic cord. Will the vasectomy affect his sexual performance? Will his sexual desire be altered? What will be the components and volume of his ejaculate? Will he be sterile or infertile?

5. A number of pathogenic (disease-causing) organisms are transmitted through sexual activity. From the standpoint of the pathogen, why does coitus provide an ideal means of propagation?
