 Introduction

The chapters following this one focus on the organ systems of the body. These systems derive their functions not from their cells alone but from how the cells are organized into tissues. The focus of this chapter, then, is histology–the study of the organization of cells and extracellular material into tissues and organs. Histology bridges the gap between cytology and gross anatomy and provides a basis for understanding system physiology.
