Chapter Objectives

  1. Name the major bony landmarks, and explain the functional significance of each.
  2. Describe the major features of the skull as seen from the superior, posterior, lateral, inferior, and frontal views.
  3. Describe the major features of the floor of the cranial vault, including the foramina and what passes through them.
  4. List the bones of the cranial vault and of the face.
  5. Describe the four major curvatures of the vertebral column, explain what causes them, and indicate when these curvatures develop.
  6. List the features that characterize the vertebrae of the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral regions.
  7. Give the number of and explain the difference between true, false, and floating ribs.
  8. Describe the shape of the three parts of the sternum and their relationship to the ribs.
  9. Describe the bones of the pectoral girdle, and point out surface features that can be seen on a living human.
  10. List the major features of the humerus, and give the function of each.
  11. Describe the major features of the ulna and radius, and explain how these two bones interact when the radius is rotated around the ulna.
  12. List the eight carpal bones, and describe the carpal tunnel.
  13. Indicate the skeletal differences between the thumb and the fingers.
  14. Describe the coxa in relation to the three fused bones composing it.
  15. List and explain the differences between the male and the female pelves.
  16. Describe the head and neck of the femur, and compare them to those of the humerus.
  17. Describe the relationships among tibia, fibula, and femur.
  18. List the tarsal bones, and describe the relationships among the tibia, fibula, talus, and calcaneus.
