Chapter 13: Central Nervous System: Brain and Spinal Cord

Chapter Objectives

  1. Describe the formation of the neural tube, and list the structures that develop from its various parts.
  2. List the parts of the brain.
  3. Define what is included in the brainstem, and describe its major features.
  4. Describe the major function of the reticular formation.
  5. List the regions of the diencephalon, and indicate their major functions.
  6. Describe the major functional areas of the cerebral cortex, and explain their interactions.
  7. Describe and explain the pathway for speech.
  8. Describe the basic brain waves, and correlate them with brain function.
  9. Explain how sensory, short-term, and long-term memory work.
  10. Describe the major functions of the basal nuclei.
  11. Describe the components and functions of the limbic system.
  12. Describe the major functions of the cerebellum, and explain its comparator function.
  13. Describe the spinal cord in cross section, explaining the functions of each area.
  14. Diagram the stretch reflex, Golgi tendon reflex, withdrawal reflex, reciprocal innervation, and the crossed extensor reflex. Explain the function of each of these reflexes.
  15. Describe the course of the fibers associated with the spinothalamic and dorsal-column/medial-lemniscal systems.
  16. Outline the course and describe the function of the corticospinal, corticobulbar, and indirect tracts.
  17. Describe the three meningeal layers surrounding the central nervous system.
  18. Name the four ventricles of the brain, and describe their locations and the connections between them.
  19. Describe the origin, composition, and circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid.
