Chapter Objectives

  1. List the most important information relating to endocrine glands and their secretions.
  2. Describe the embryonic development, anatomy, and location of the pituitary gland, and describe the functional and structural relationships between the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland.
  3. Describe the secretory cells of the posterior pituitary, including the location of their cell bodies, the site of hormone synthesis, the transport of hormones to the posterior pituitary, and hormone secretion.
  4. Outline the means by which anterior pituitary hormone secretion is regulated.
  5. Describe the target tissues, regulation, and responses to each of the posterior and anterior pituitary hormones.
  6. Describe the structure and location of the thyroid gland.
  7. Describe the response of target tissues to thyroid hormones, and outline the regulation of thyroid hormone secretion.
  8. Describe the regulation of calcitonin secretion, and describe its function.
  9. Explain the function of parathyroid hormone, and describe the means by which its secretion is regulated.
  10. Explain the relationship between parathyroid hormone and vitamin D.
  11. Describe the structure and embryologic development of the adrenal glands, ad describe the response of the target tissues to each of the adrenal hormones.
  12. Describe the means by which the adrenal hormones are regulated.
  13. Describe the position and structure of the pancreas, and list the substances secreted by the pancreas and their functions.
  14. Explain the regulation of insulin and glucagon secretion, and describe how blood-nutrient levels are regulated by hormones after a meal and during exercise.
  15. Describe the structure and location of the pineal body, the products it secretes, and the functions of these products.
