Chapter 1: Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiololgy |
I. The Science of Anatomy and Physiology
Concept: Anatomy and physiology are integrated, dynamic sciences with an exciting heritage. These sciences provide the foundation for personal health and clinical applications.
II. Classification and Characteristics of Humans
Concept: Humans are biological organisms belonging to the phylum Chordata within the kingdom Animalia and to the family Hominidae within the class Mammalia and the order Primates.
III. Body Organization
Concept: Structural and functional levels of organization characterize the human body, and each of its parts contributes to the total organism.
IV. Planes of Reference and Descriptive Terminology
Concept: All of the descriptive planes of reference and terms of direction used in the science of anatomy and physiology are standardized because of their reference to the body in anatomical position.
V. Body Regions and Body Cavities
Concept: The human body is divided into regions and specific local areas that can be identified on the surface. The head and trunk contain internal organs housed in distinct body cavities.
VI. Homeostasis and Feedback Control
Concept: The regulatory mechanisms of the body can be understood in terms of a single, shared function: that of maintaining a dynamic constancy of the internal environment, or homeostasis. Homeostasis is maintained by effectors, which are regulated by sensory information from the internal environment.
