synthetic medium

a preparation that is chemically defined (also called a defined medium)

selective medium permits preferential growth of certain microorganisms
differential medium distinguishes among different microorganisms by bringing out variations in their reaction
a light microscope with 2 lenses
simple stain a stain for microscopy using a single stain
differential stain uses primary and contrasting counterstains e.g. Gram stain and acid-fast stain
