The following sites will provide you with the opportunity to "play the research geneticist" by allowing you to perform experiments and/or collect and analyze data.

• The Virtual Fly Lab: Play the research geneticist by performing your own virtual Drosophila crosses and analyzing the data collection at this site. Cross a wild-type male and a female with dumpy wings and sepia eyes. Interbreed this F1 generation to generate an F2 generation. How are these two mutations inherited?

• Oodles of Angels Phenotype Calculator: Perform your own angelfish crosses by selecting the phenotypic characteristics of angel fish.

• Online Medelian Inheritance in Man is a searchable database of information on genetic diseases. Try searching for information on cystic fibrosis, maple syrup urine disease, and Huntington disease. Additional information about the genetic basis of cystic fibrosis and Huntington disease can be accessed through The Human Gene Map site.

• Heredity: What are the chances? Predict the phenotypes of offspring resulting from a set of human parents with know traits.

• Online Onion Root Tips at The Biology Project provides you with a digital version of the classic laboratory experiment. Use the data collected at this site to construct a cell cycle for the onion root tip.

• Chi Square Applet: Use this site to calculate the chi-square statistic for a set of data.

• The Virtual Fly Lab: Play the research geneticist by performing your own virtual Drosophila crosses and analyzing the data collected at this site. Perform a cross between a female with dumpy wings and sepia eyes and a wild-type male. Interbreed this F1 generation to generate an F2 generation. In this generation, do your results appear to approximate a 9:3:3:1 ratio? Use the chi-square function to statistically test the hypothesis that the data approximate a good fit to the 9:3:3:1 ratio expected if the two traits are independently assorting. Next, cross a female with brown eyes and black body to a wild-type male. Use the chi-square to statistically test the hypothesis that the data approximate a good fit to a 9:3:3:1 ratio.

• VassarStats: Web Site for Statistical Computation can be used to calculate chi-square statistics.

Cross a wild-type male and a female with a yellow body and white eyes. Interbreed this F1 generation to generate an F2 generation. Also perform the reciprocal cross. How are these two mutations inherited? Confirm your assessment with the chi-square test. Try crossing a miniature female with sepia eyes to a wild-type male. Which, if any, of these traits are sex-linked?

• Online Medelian Inheritance in Man is a searchable database of information on genetic diseases. Try searching for information on the X-linked human diseases hemophilia and muscular dystrophy. Additional information about the genetic basis of these two diseases can be accessed through The Human Gene Map site.

• The Virtual Fly Lab: Play the research geneticist by performing your own virtual Drosophila crosses and analyzing the data collected at this site. Try crossing a female with sepia eyes and ebony body to a wild-type male. Intercross the offspring to generate an F2 generation. Are these two genes independently assorting or linked? Confirm your assessment with the chi-square test.

• FlyBase is a database of the Drosophila genome.

• You can easily obtain the nucleotide sequence for a several genes associated with an inherited human genetic disorder using The Human Gene Map site and GenBank. On the featured genes page of the Human Gene Map site you will find a list of genetic diseases/disorders, the gene designation, and the chromosome location. Click on the gene of interest to open a page containing information about the disorder and the location of the gene within the human genome. To obtain the nucleotide sequence of the gene, select the gene sequence in GenBank link under the database records section at the bottom of the page. Toward the bottom of the linked page, you will find the nucleotide sequence of the gene. This information can be saved on your computer's hard drive for later viewing or analysis.

• Use the Oligo Calculator to determine the melting temperature of a nucleic acid.

• DNA Sequence Analysis and Comparison Tutorial provides sequence analysis exercises which allow you to compare mitochondrial genomes and to test human evolution theories. Enter a DNA sequence, identify the coding regions, and compare it to sequences from other organisms.

• You can easily obtain the nucleotide sequence for an mRNA associated with an inherited human genetic disorder using The Human Gene Map site and GenBank. Go to the featured genes section of the Human Gene Map and select a gene associated with a disorder you would like to know more about. Clicking on the gene will open a page containing information about the disorder and the location of the gene within the human genome. To obtain the nucleotide sequence of the mRNA, select mRNA in GenBank link under the database records section at the bottom of the page. Toward the bottom of the linked page, you will find the nucleotide sequence of the mRNA produced by the gene. This information can be saved on your computer's hard drive for later viewing. Note, however, that not all entries will provide information about the mRNA sequence.

• You can easily obtain the amino acid sequence for a protein associated with an inherited human genetic disorder using The Human Gene Map site and Swiss-Prot. Go to the featured genes section of the Human Gene Map and select a gene associated with a disorder you would like to know more about. Clicking on the gene will open a page containing information about the disorder and the location of the gene within the human genome. To obtain the amino acid sequence of the protein, select the nucleotide sequence in Swiss-Prot link under the database records section at the bottom of the page. Toward the bottom of the linked page, you will find the amino acid sequence of the protein. This information can be saved on your computer's hard drive for later viewing.

• WebCutter is an interactive restriction mapping tool. Provide a DNA sequence and the program at this site will identify known restriction sites.

• Blast Search is an interactive program that searches for similarities between a sequence you enter and thousands of other sequences contained in databases worldwide.

• DNA Sequence Analysis and Comparison Tutorial provides sequence analysis exercises which allow you to compare mitochondrial genomes and to test human evolution theories. Enter a DNA sequence, identify the coding regions, and compare it to sequences from other organisms.

• The Gene Discovery Page for the bench scientist allows you to travel the path to gene discovery.

• The Operon Database contains information about metabolic pathways and controlling operons in E. coli.

• EcoCyc: Encyclopedia of E. coli Genes and Metabolism contains a searchable database of genes.

• Compare the telomeric repeat sequences in eukaryotes and investigate cloned telomerase gene sequences at these sites. You can access original research papers on telomeres with the telomere database.

• Online Medelian Inheritance in Man is a searchable database of information on genetic diseases. Try searching for information on xeroderma pigmentosum.

• Mutation Databases provides an inclusive list of mutated genes and links to the associated databases and information sources.

• DNA Sequence Analysis and Comparison Tutorial provides sequence analysis exercises which allow you to compare mitochondrial genomes and to test human evolution theories. Enter a DNA sequence, identify the coding regions, and compare it to sequences from other organisms.

• MITOMAP is a human mitochondrial genome database.

• VassarStats: Web Site for Statistical Computation can be used to calculate correlation coefficients and t-tests.

• Use the Statistics Calculator to compute the mean, standard deviation, and other descriptive statistics for a set of data.

• You can calculate Pearson Correlations with the Correlation Calculator.

• The Interactive Hardy-Weinberg Simulator allows you to examine the conditions necessary to maintain Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium.
