Error-prone (SOS) repair. Ultraviolet light activates the RecA co-protease, which stimulates the LexA protein (purple) to cleave itself, releasing it form the umuDC operon. This results in synthesis of UmuC and UmuD proteins, which somehow allow DNA synthesis across from a thymine dimer, even though mistakes (blue) will usually be made.
