Species

Biodiversity is more complex than a species occurrence list for a given area, which is termed species richness. Sometimes it is important to count the abundance of each species present, and measures of both richness and “evenness” are combined into a number called a species diversity index. These measurements help environmental scientists get a quick picture of biodiversity, and can be very useful in reconnaissance work in poorly studied areas.
